Welcome to Union Station, Canada's busiest transportation facility and the second-busiest railway station in North America, behind New York's Penn Station. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts style and is often called Canada's largest and most opulent railway station. Look at the colonnade facing Front Street: 22 Roman Tuscan columns of limestone, each 40 feet high and weighing 75 tons. Inside, the ticket lobby, known as the Great Hall, runs the entire length of the main building.
The station was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales, on August 6, 1927, who cut the ribbon with a pair of gold scissors. It has been a National Historic Site of Canada since 1975, and in a May 2026 survey it ranked fifth among the world's most luxurious and high-performing rail hubs.
๐ถ Walk to the next stop (0.3 mile ยท ~6 min walk): Walk east along Front Street to Yonge Street, where the Hall of Fame is inside Brookfield Place. About 6 minutes.
This is the Hockey Hall of Fame, dedicated to the history of ice hockey. It was established in 1943 in Kingston, Ontario, and inducted its first honoured members in 1945, before it even had a permanent home. It moved to Toronto in 1958, opened its first building at Exhibition Place in 1961, and moved here in 1993, into Brookfield Place and a historic Bank of Montreal building. Inside are trophies, memorabilia and equipment worn in special games.
The centrepiece of the Esso Great Hall, described as a cathedral to the icons of hockey, is the Stanley Cup. Every June, an 18-person committee meets to choose new honourees, inducted as players, builders or on-ice officials. Since 2010 there has also been a category for female players.
๐ถ Walk to the next stop (940 ft ยท ~4 min walk): Continue east along Front Street to the wedge-shaped red-brick building where Front and Wellington meet. About 4 minutes.
