Welcome to Trinity College Dublin, Ireland's oldest university, founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth the First. It was built on the site of the former Priory of All Hallows, and for over two centuries it was the Protestant university of the ruling elite. Its famous alumni include Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Beckett and Bram Stoker, and it's home to the world's oldest student society, The Hist, founded in 1770. The college's greatest treasure is the Book of Kells, which the library has housed since 1661.
It's displayed in the Old Library, begun in 1712, which includes the Long Room and receives over 900,000 visitors a year, making it Dublin's second-most visited tourist destination. Inside the grounds, look for landmarks such as the Campanile.
๐ถ Walk to the next stop (0.3 mile ยท ~6 min walk): Walk southwest from the front gate and up Grafton Street, the pedestrian shopping street. About 6 minutes.
This is Grafton Street, one of Dublin's two principal shopping streets. It runs from College Green, its lowest point, up to St Stephen's Green, its highest. It was developed from a laneway in the early 18th century and named after Charles FitzRoy, the second Duke of Grafton, a grandson of King Charles the Second, who owned land here. After a rough 19th century, it became known in the 20th century for Bewley's coffee house, fine shopping and buskers, and today it's one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world to rent on.
Most of it has been pedestrianised since 1982. The Molly Malone statue stood at the north end until 2014, when it moved to Suffolk Street. Near the Stephen's Green end, on Harry Street, is a bronze statue of Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy.
๐ถ Walk to the next stop (0.3 mile ยท ~6 min walk): Continue south up Grafton Street to the arch at the corner of St Stephen's Green. About 6 minutes.
